Year Round Walking, Running and
Bicycling Events
 
The following events have been set up by the Grant County Walkability Accessibility Advocacy Group and the Grant County Bicycle Advocacy Group. 

 

Earth Day   (April 24th, 10:00a.m. to 2:00p.m.)

This year will be the 40th anniversary of Earth Day.  Special events at Penny Park this year include: planting a tree to replace some of those destroyed by last year's fire, creating a time capsule holding memorabilia from this 40th anniversary celebration and burying it under a rosemary bush and there will be various performers in the Penny Park amphitheater throughout the day. SRAM “Tour of the Gila” Bicycle Race  (April 28-May 2nd)                                                                               The Tour of the Gila is a 5 day (4 days for Sr. Men 4,5 and Women 3,4) stage race, consisting of  3 Road Races, an Individual Time Trial and a Criterium (2 road races, an Individual Time Trial and a Criterium for Sr. Men 4,5 and Women 3,4). The overall winner to be decided on basis of lowest overall time for all races. Registration information can be found at: tourofthegila.com

National Bike to Work Week  (May 17-21)                                                                               Bike-to-Work Day is an annual event held on the third Friday of May across the United States and Canada that promotes the bicycle as an option for commuting to work. In 2010 Bike-to-Work day will be on Friday May 21.  Bike-to-Work Day was originated by the League of American Bicyclists in 1956 and is a part of Bike-to-Work Week, which is in turn part of National Bike Month.

Fort Bayard Wilderness Run / Walk  ( May 29th)                                                                      The Fort Bayard Wilderness Run is a challenging and scenic course in the foothills of the Gila Wilderness, taking place off-pavement, on trails and dirt roads in the Gila National Forest. The 8-mile Wilderness Run, as well as the 2-mile run and 5-K walk, start and finish at the historic parade grounds of Ft. Bayard.  For more information please call 388-2325.

National Trails Day (June 5th)

The American Hiking Society’s signature trail awareness program, National Trails Day, inspires the public and trail enthusiasts nationwide to discover, learn about and celebrate trails while participating in community trail events.  This year’s Celebration / Work Day will focus on the San Vicente Trail and the Gomez Peak Trail System.  For more information please contact Terrence Ruane at 534-0665 or via e-mail terrence@wellnesscoalition.org

 

Boston Hill 1/2 Marathon  (July 3, 2010)

SignalPeak Challenge MountainBike Race  (August 14 and 15)

This mountain bicycling event contains both a down hill and a cross-country challenge.  Food is an open pit BB-Q on Sat.  Info at http://nmors.wordpress.com/ .

The Bike Works - Silver City Recreation Center  (year round)

This community Bikeworks program, co-sponsored by both the Town of Silver City and Grant County is  located on 10th St..  The program offers year round activities including the earn-a-bike program, regular bicycle rides, and the yellow bike program.  The current schedule is W 3-7 open workshop, Th 3-7 open workshop, F 6-8 open workshop, Sa 10-12 community bike ride 12-4 open workshop, Su 5-8 open workshop.  Hike & Bike has brochures. For more information please contact Dave Baker at 590-2166 (usually a message) or 388-1444 

 

Walk and Roll to School Day  (first Wednesday in October each year)

Walk and Roll to School Day is an international event to celebrate walking and “rolling” (through non-motorized transportation) to school and promote awareness of pedestrians, bicyclists and other non-motorized transportation users in our communities.Please contact your local school district for more information on local events.

 

All Souls 5K & 7-Mile Trail Run   (October 30, 2010)

This challenging trail run and walk offers runners a 5K on the San Vicente Trail &, if runners haven’t had enough, another 4 miles on Boston Hill.  The run / walk is a celebration of two beloved town trails & the sport of distance running.  Contact Jim McIntosh at Aldo Leopold High School (313-7367).

 

Mustang Stampede- (Fall 2010 – TBA)
